I had no natural gift to be anything — not an athlete, not an actor, not a writer, not a director, a painter of garden porches — not anything. So I’ve worked really hard, because nothing ever came easily to me.

Everyone should watch this video. This is one of the most inspiring things I’ve ever seen. It’s an "It Gets Better" video by Texas Councilman Joel Burns. It doesn’t matter whether you’re straight or gay, this video is important to watch.

The fight against bullying is a cause that has always been close to my heart. I’ve always loathed the concept of conformity crushing individuality. Essentially, that’s how I see teen bullying. Specifically, it has come to my attention that LGBTQ youth attempt suicide four times more often than heterosexual youth. The world needs to wake up. This is unacceptable.

You’ve heard the stories and you may have somewhat lamented, but it’s time to do something proactive. These are young people who could have done something extraordinary with their lives. They could have cured AIDS, invented something spectacular, or inspired other young people. They could have just lived a great life.

Check out The Trevor Project. It’s an organization created to end suicide among LGBTQ youth; however, it doesn’t matter whether you’re gay or straight, if you feel like giving up, there’s always someone there to listen.

Being different can sometimes suck, but always remember that feelings of loneliness, anger, frustration, or sadness teach you something. You should never hope or wish to be average or “normal”… that’s so boring and overrated. Being different is a privilege so appreciate it.

Always remember the mantra this blog is founded on… "Sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand." Meaning, if you feel like you have nothing going for you in life, remember that you may actually have something very special and spectacular going for you. Just give yourself a chance.

I’d like to be remembered as a guy who tried — tried to be part of his times, tried to help people communicate with one another, tried to find some decency in his own life, tried to extend himself as a human being. Someone who isn’t complacent, who doesn’t cop out.

Toy Story 3 not only delivers as a secondary sequel to a very successful Disney Pixar film, it also delivers as a great re-imagining of the Old Hollywood prison flick; most notably Cool Hand Luke!

The third installment was more nostalgic and sad than anything but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t great. I couldn’t believe that there were some jackhole critics on Rotten Tomatoes that had to ruin the series consecutive “100% ripe” ratings, all due to the fact that it wasn’t “happy” enough. Yes, the series started as a children’s franchise but it was smart enough to hold the attention of a maturing audience. This current installment wasn’t just an attempt to milk the Toy Story series for all it was worth. It was a chance to give the audience more of what they wanted and to revisit some much loved characters one last time. Disney and Pixar have continuous success with their animated features. They didn’t have to do Toy Story 3.

Also, much of the film’s premise was a re-imagining of the Old Hollywood prison movie, including the film this blog is dedicated to. What I’ve posted above is a clip from Cool Hand Luke. If you’ve seen Toy Story 3, or if you’re a Newman fan and want a reason to see it, zoom ahead to about the 7:30 mark in the video. Yes, Toy Story 3 reinvents “the box!”

As if seeing Mr. Potato Head get thrown in “the box” (now a daycare sand box) wasn’t funny enough, the entire conflict the film surrounds, toys escaping for pre-k hell, is a clever take on the old-school prison genre in general, and while the film is most definitely enjoyable to newcomers in their single digits, these parallels are thrown in for the older fans. Where it truly succeeds is that it could most definitely stand alone. Had you never even heard of the original two films, you could still appreciate this one.

There aren’t many areas that I would critique. I would have liked to have been more familiarized with some of the newer characters. Also, (minor spoiler) I think the kid in me would have liked a little sign from Andy that maybe he would one day check up on his old “friends,” although I know this would not be realistic.

Paul Newman swing dancing 60’s style with his wife in there home circa 1965.
Paul Newman is the livelihood of this blog, for me if not for any actual followers, but he’s been somewhat absent from posts for a while now. Here’s just a little something different to hold any Old Hollywood fans over for a while.

The Star Quality of Paul Newman and more

T

o remember why I started writing and where I want to go.

I’ve had a lot of fun writing. I like that I started writing this blog in an attempt to rally for a job blogging with Vh1. I really like that Megan Hauserman of Vh1 fame has reposted my blog and contact information on her website in support. More importantly, I love that I kept writing both because I wanted to, and because people have actually been reading.

Thanks Megan!

Anyway, I started by posting some NYU film critiques, and by reviewing some reality shows. Once I started to pick up the pace, I started to focus my writing on things I was really interested in like Hollywood, inspiring facts, the fame platform, bad girl bombshells, and, of course, Paul Newman.

Having said that, and while I do love me some Jwoww, I just wanted to remind myself, and hopefully inspire at least one other reader, of why I dedicated this blog to my hero Paul Newman.

Paul was never the greatest technical actor, but he worked extremely hard, he never gave up on his dream, and above all else, he had star quality. More importantly than what he had, is what he did. As of 2008 (it’s now 2010, remember), Paul Newman is credited as donating over $280 million to charity, all due to a good head on his shoulders, a heart in the right place, and a massive platform.

Cool Hand Luke is my favorite Paul Newman movie because of it’s message:

There are always going to be people in your life who don’t get it. They’ll feel like they should have power over you, for one reason or another, but if you’re the right kind of person, a person with that star quality, that little something special, then they’ll always be a step behind, wondering what makes you tick.
